Is it worth your time?

Have you ever found yourself unexpectedly trapped in a cult? It’s a question that may seem far-fetched, but for Lenz, it was a harsh reality. However, her powerful memoir, Dinner for Vampires, provides insight into how it can happen to anyone. Lenz invites us into her world, where what began as a simple desire for connection and community quickly spiraled into a cult.

The path to becoming a victim of a cult is not a straightforward one. Lenz takes us through her journey, from initially joining a seemingly harmless bible study group in Los Angeles to completely isolating herself in Idaho, far from her loved ones and her job. The process of falling prey to a cult begins with “love bombing,” where members are showered with attention and affection, followed by the gradual disconnection from family and outside communities. Lenz even shares how she was convinced to give up her passion for performing on Broadway, with the promise that it would all come back to her through her tithing. It should not be a spoiler to say that it didn’t.

But despite losing millions of dollars and missed opportunities, Lenz’s story ultimately ends on a positive note, as she breaks free from the cult and reclaims her life. Her experience serves as a cautionary tale, and she offers valuable advice on how to recognize and avoid falling into a cult yourself.

The reason I’m now so willing to tell my story – is that cults can come in multiple guises, and anybody can fall for one  – it just depends on your blind spots.

Dinner For Vampires is a fast-paced read that sheds light on the inner workings of a high-control group and how it can ensnare anyone, regardless of their background or beliefs. Lenz’s honest and compelling storytelling is a testament to the power of resilience and the human spirit. So if you want to gain a deeper understanding of the allure and warning signs of a cult, be sure to add this book to your reading list.
